Blood of the Last Dragon
Blood of the Last Dragon
A First-Person Dungeon Crawler for the ANSI Age
One hundred years have passed since the great hero slew the Red Dragon. That victory has faded into myth. But new evils stir, monsters lurk in the forest, and shadows creep where light once held firm. You are a hero... or at least, you'd like to be.
B.O.L.D. drops you into a world of elemental fury, rendered in stunning 3D ANSI Graphics on an 80x25 virtual terminal with a 16-color ANSI palette. Every wall, monster, and flickering torch is drawn with ASCII characters, just as the ancients intended.
Made for Dungeon Crawler Jam 2026 using the themes Elemental Rock, Paper, Scissors and Dragon.
TL;DR
- Kill enemies in the forest and bring them back to Town for your reward! Enemies will forecast their next attack, equipping the correct elemental defense against the attack prevents the damage.
- Play testers completed the game in about 90 minutes
- There is an auto save each time you visit the town that is preserved if you cannot finish the game in one sitting
Known Bugs
- There is a visual bug that sometimes causes black artifaccts to appear on the screen. If this occurs, open the Map to clear the artifacts.
- CRT shader does not work well if you are not using GPU Acceleration in your browser, it is off by default but can be toggle in the settings if you experience issues
- Seth Able will say he marks a spot on your map, the marker only appears in the forest if you've already visited the location. If you still can't find it, head south.
Helpful Spoilers
If you want to breeze through the first area and don't mind spoilers, here are some "helpful" spoilers here:
- You can continue to beg to get up to 10 - 20 gold then buy the first weapon and armor upgrade.
- Select Fire shard as your first shard, it will destroy most of the starter enemies. Be sure to put it in your weapon.
- If you need an extra fire shard, you can get one by begging.
- If you follow the right wall after exiting town, you will find Seth's Book
- You must equip a fire weapon to burn bushes
Tips & Tricks
Controls: WASD to move, Q/E to rotate, J for Journal, M for Map, G for Settings.
Getting Started: Check your Journal [J] often, it tells you what to do next. Visit all three town NPCs early for quests and services. Broke? Beg in the Town Square for a few coins to get started.
Level Up: You can level up at [T]urgon's Training Grounds, don't forget to go here after you return to town.
Elemental Shards: Each weapon and armor can have up to two! Mix and match elements for powerful combinations. You can recover used shards by selling your equipment back to Abdul
Combat: Carry multiple weapons and armor! Enemies will forecast their next attack, choosing the correct armor can mean the difference between life and death!
Exploration: Open the Map [M], move the cursor to a visited tile, and press [T] to auto-travel there. If brambles block your path, you need a weapon with a Fire shard.

It is a better sequal to Legend of the Red Dragon, then the actual sequal.
Missing one skeleton in the mines, was it because I fled from it?
No, it should show up even if you fled from it. You may need to venture further from the entrance. Monster difficulty has “bands” that are based on the distance from the entrance. If you go further, you will likely get it.
Ohhh, I thought they were based on a specific tile for some reason since they always seemed to show up in junctions and dead ends to me lol
Extra question: I use a fire/death sword attack on a life enemy, but the strike that doesn't cost MP doesn't do extra damage, even though it's supposed to be fire/death damage. I'm not sure if the shadow or fire strike spells do extra damage either, so is it better to just use a single element weapon for the more efficient magic costs?
Good question! The bonuses and penalties stack for the “basic” attack on the weapon (but not for the MP abilities). For example, Fire does +50% to Life enemies and Death does +50% to Life enemies – This will add a 2x multiplier to attacks against enemies who have life as their defense. It also will make water enemies immune to the basic attack (-100%).
I hope this makes sense.
In this version of the game, I think it makes most sense to simply stack shards on the same weapon as that reduces the cost of MP attacks giving you heavy damage against the appropriate enemies (e.g. 2 different weapons will cover 80% of enemies)
Love the BBS vibes!
I really enjoyed this, cool game!
Loved it! Took me a second to get the hang of things but then I was collecting monsters in no time. Never did solve the mine.
Thanks so much for taking the time to play! The game does save your progress so if you decide to return, you should be able to resume your quest.
Let me know if you want any hints. I suspect Seth might also be able to help you.
I returned and found the item I was missing! Sending my money to fake street! Can't wait for part 2.
This turned out way better than even I had hoped!
